when i was little
i used to play
the side yard was my kingdom
starting my own civilization
chasing animals with sticks
prodding invasive beehives
building houses for fellow nymphs of the wood
and i wrote
oh, how i wrote!
fantastic tales of feathers and wings and fur
sheets and sheets of pouring words!
but soon the words faded
and the games did too
became cheap and tarnished
no use in rebuilding the flooded lands
don't bother to climb back up the hill of rocks
urges to explores the mountain gone
one by one
all the kids in the neighbourhood
grew up
transitioned into teenagers
disappeared.
the games were stupid
the stories were lame
the woods were icky.
and soon enoughit hit me too
magical lands and superpowers replaced
by boys, eyeliner, getting my ears pierced
going to middle school
being grown up
far too early
killed my childhood.
